Continuing off a thread from /cult/
A thread to collect any libre games and discuss them as well.

Additionally for the case of Xonotic, it left off organizing a Team Deathmatch and CTF event with 8chan. (We're expecting the event to be on Saturday as discussed in game, but it was before the site's threads got deleted. Let us know about whatever changes in plans.)

>Xonotic
Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
>Wesnoth
Haven't seen this name in so many years. I was probably like 13-14 when i played this.

How active is Xonotic? Will the turnout for saturday be good? I work night shifts wed-sun so i'm kind of fuarrrked. Hardcore Quake 2 player.

8chan has around 6 players for their team. But I don't know about players for the lainchan team.

You can get an idea of activity on their stats page.
http://stats.xonotic.org/
Lainchan is hosting one of the most active servers.

Sigh URLs plox cuz people are lazy.
http://xonotic.org/ http://wesnoth.org/ no idea what the last pic is from though.

Xonotic in my opinion is the best arena shoot out there, but there are other good ones, such as alien arena or red eclipse, i dont have the addresses handy right now.

Wesnoth is also great, there is even an android port, but turn based strategy isnt my thing, so i cant say too much in detail about it, it certainly isnt bad.

There are also many must plays real time strategy games, i will only present you the best ones since there are so many, these are the must plays so dont miss out.

The best first: the spring engine http://springrts.com with is many games is reachable from http://springlobby.info, its a bit tricky to get the hang of it at first, but well worth the effort.
My personal recommendations are spring 1944 http://spring1944.github.io/, metal factions http://metalfactions.pt/ and the cursed https://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=38&p=581584#p581584.
All games, maps and the spring engine are downloaded trough the lobby if you join a battle, so you dont have to do anything in most cases.
Spring and its games have a steep learning curve, but its worth the trouble.

0ad https://play0ad.com/ is a age of empires like game in 3d, it has many factions set in ancient times with interesting warfare and economy.
The games is at quality is of very high quality.

Openra http://www.openra.net is another cool game, a remake of the old C&C games (which are free too now but not FOSS BTW), it has some fun missions for in between when you have 15 minutes to kill, or you can play it in multiplayer or skirmish.

Warzone 2100 http://wz2100.net/ is another really great rts, the campaign is a must play, but dont forget to download the campaign videos and save often, also recycle obsolete units.

Another cool game which isnt a RTS but a FPS/RTS hybrid is tremulous, it is available with a new client by grangerhub http://grangerhub.com
This is a real piece of cult FOSS game with a very rich and incredibly interesting history, players and selection of maps.
Be sure to give it a shot.

I also made this poll at http://www.strawpoll.me/12737591 to see what games people here would want to play, if there is enough interest we can work something out.

There are many many more good FOSS games, finding them all is a hard piece of work, but i will keep you guys on the loop as much as i can.
I will post more later on as i verify some more games.

Have fun.

>We had updated one where the admin was contactable.

I ran the original one, no connections in like 2+ weeks and I've never got an mail on the address I posted. I've got kernel panic on the server and I didn't check it, since nobody played on it anyway.

Red Eclipse is pretty fun. Many interactive fiction interpreters and MUD clients are free too.

Is team lainchan ready for CTF/TDM today?
Its fine if you guys aren't considering what happened to the site.

I got Xonotic yesterday and it's been really fun. Probably the best FOSS game I've ever played. There's ~200 servers - but they're all empty! Still, it's playing vs bots is entertaining; they're hard to kill even on medium difficulty. I even saw a lainchan EU server. Any West Coast lainons play this?

I run this server

There's some regular west coast regular players on it as well. Most of them are from 8chan but lainons are very welcome.

Cool, I'll check it out. What time of day/week do you usually have the most players on, do you know?

Active hours tend to be 4 PM PST to late evening. There's one insomniac who occasionally plays defrag/CTS either alone or with others at late nights.

There used to be daily activity, but lately its not been the case. Typically there's games both weekday and weekend still.

I made the original thread on old /cult/. I was intrigued when I saw this thread, but disappointed with it. I was also disappointed with the old thread.

Here's my thread: https://lainchan.org/r/res/693.html

I want you to notice the differences. This thread mainly concerns itself with some 8chan event. Compare the first post in my thread with the posts in this one. When I made the old thread, I didn't want a dump of links with barely a sentence to describe them, if that. I didn't want the thread to be consumed about multiplayer event discussion that only draws from the actual topic, to introduce people to other games with good descriptions and whatnot.

These are two new lines from my thread:
>It was an issue with the old thread for people to list off many games with barely a sentence accompanying them, if that. With this thread, prefer to spend an entire post detailing a single game and why you find it fun and whatnot; assume the reader is entirely unfamiliar with it; include screenshots.

>This is also not a thread for organizing events for games, as that interferes with the primary purpose of introducing new and interesting games to people.

I want my thread to have care put into the posts and actually describe the games it recommends in great detail. So, I suggest this thread become the thread for discussing multiplayer events and whatnot, whereas mine be the thread for introducing Free Software games in detail.

Just start with buses, then move up to a one line railroad, then gradually add in extra lines & signals etc, while alt-tabbing into the wiki as needed

Opsu is... playable. Not great. Not big into Stepmania, but it's also open source.

How about OpenRCT2?

That is what the websites of said games are for, you could get more info there than any post here could make.

And given the fact that they are free everyone can and should try those and make up his own mind, if they were commercial games then that would be a different story.

I dont even see the point of discussing a foss game without a url not everyone who doesnt know them wants to google them.

And imo some discussion is fine but if people want to talk about a specific game in detail then why not make a new thread and link it here.

They're gonna be playing Xonotic on this, and their East coast server all weekend they said. It's a good server, the most populous I've seen yet. Pacific is 16 players and East is 32 players IRC.

The issue is that I'm not aware of many Free Software games and must rely on word of mouth for finding many of those I currently enjoy.

Okay.

I forgot to put a URL in that post; I did the first time, last time.

That's what this thread is, in effect.
