I was more concerned with those two towers right where your legs would be if you wanted to look at that monitor.

regardless here is mine. Actual desk is reasonably tidy but that back left corner is a horrifying rats nest of cables. laptop is a macbook pro 2012 running Linux Mint, I keep a small up to date osx partition on it just in case. The tower at the left is a my home server running CentOS 7, basically just NAS/FTP/media but I run odd jobs on it as well like DHCP. Also I'm planing on starting some more public facing services like a telnet bbs but we will see. The big tower on the right is a botnet 10 gayman rig but I don't game anymore so it's really just an over powered web browser.

all i have to pay for is food. i can almost stand up straight so thats pretty dope.

the bed itsnt bad. i like sleeping on the floor.

im really proud of the desk i made out of a travel case for a bass guitar, a side table that someone threw out, some storage bins and paint cans to raise it. its surprisingly conformable and usable. function > form

this isnt a bad life. the hardest part is actually that the power goes out almost once a week here, sometimes for like 8 hours. its the lack of internet during outages that kills me. i need my fix.

They do. The attrition rate is crazy high. I dont have any concrete numbers, but it would not suprise me if they were second only to SEAL/SWCC.

To put it into perspective, my boot camp division was ~95 people, 14 of us billeted for subs. 9 made it to submarine school. 3 graduated all the required courses and made it to the fleet. 1 had a breakdown and was kicked out, the second purposly failed a drug test in order to get out. So that left me out of 14 people who "made it".

But honestly, for me at least, you are kept so goddamn busy underway you dont have a lot of time to really think about where you are and the crazy shit youre doing.

Both aren doing anything interesting other than running openwrt. The one on the right is my actual LAN. The one on the left is just a spare that there to remind me to use it to set up a meshnet now I'm downtow but idk how to do that.

The yellow cable goes to my RPI that's just an always on server hooked up to 4 spare laptop HDDs. The router port forwards ssh to that RPI.
The blue ETH comes from my modem from across the ceiling because the ISP contractor gave me exactly 3 feet of coax cable for my modem and its on the other side of the room.

I figure I would wall mount a bunch of tech then make the ETH cables look like art by making them go in pretty patterns.

General setup will be:
- All MY devices are connected to the MASTER router,
- All guest devices will be connected to the SLAVE router
- All configuration on BOTH routers will only be accessible from devices on the MASTER network
- Devices on the SLAVE network can only communicate with each other or the internet.
- SLAVE router will run CJDNS, which is the last step. Apparently you can install it with opkg.

I really like this, I don't really care about the battlestation but the room is giving me some ideas.

If you don't mind, is this like a 1/2 room apartment?

For a sake of scale, what's the rough square footage of your room, it kinda looks like you have like a single room. Maybe this is like a finished basement, since I notice what appears to be support beams all prettied up. But you clearly have separate rooms since between the shots you have different shades of paint plus the carpet is different too.

I'm going to guess you also have like a four foot wide couch, and a fairly large table maybe 4/5 foot table.

Sorry for sperging like that, I really like how you got everything, it looks nice. I do have a few things though;

>carpet

Carpet is the nastiest flooring choice would rather use hardwood or tile with rugs I can beat clean.

>Entertainment center

Completely subjective but it screams Weekends Only or Walmart. I guess I have a thing for more classic wooden cabinet designs for my place.

>All of those tvs/montors

If this is a single room apartment, then I don't know how you can sleep at night. I try to keep my electronics away from my sleeping area.

>CRT television

I see what appears to be a Gamecube and possibly a Wii, so this is understandable, but the raw weight of what I can assume is maybe a 17-22 inch CRT must being killing that desk. I hope that's real wood.

Don't think I'm being too harsh, I love it. I can't wait to post my space.

This is actually the basement of a full house from the early 70's. I'm still in college in my hometown so it's not really economical to live on my own. It's a half basement that's been multipurposed many different times so it's got a lot of hodgepodge soykaf in it. In addition, most of the furniture is the unused stuff from the floors above, so less "Walmart" and more Goodwill.

>carpet

I actually hate the carpet, and really want to replace it with either full shag carpet or tile; one of the closets flooded years ago so parts of the carpet by the door is really nasty.

>monitors

My bed area is receded slightly so the only thing I can see from it is the TV; I'm good at keeping them off so it's no big deal.

>CRT

I actually am slightly worried about this. I put most of the weight on the drawers below it so it's for the most part fine, but it's still a cheap desk.

If you do a lot of straight typing and use programs with vim like directions a 60% keyboard is awesome, you never have to leave the home row. They are also really well made objects, my pok3r has a solid metal case and is in itself a satisfying item. The cherry on the 60% cake is that they are a meme and divide people thus cause a lot of !!!fun!!! on image boards!

I still have this glowing prebuilt PC from when I was younger. I've replaced everything but the motherboard and the case. When the sharper image store closed down a few years ago I snagged a mannequin head and I put my headset on that when I'm not home. Ergonomics is key here. My keyboard and mouse are on a under-desk mounted thing that slides in and out and also pivots left and right. Keeping your keyboard on a slant with a wrist rest and at elbow height while sitting comfy is key. The stuff about monitor angle in the pic isn't nearly as important as that.

I code for fun and learning and mental stimulation. I think one of the best ways to learn is to build something useful for yourself. Like a small utility script to backup some folders to an external drive, or remove empty folders. Try to automate something you find yourself doing constantly, like for example the driver for my WiFi adapter is wack and it needs to be disabled then enabled every time the computer wakes from sleep so I wrote a small powershell script that does that when the machine wakes.

Or one time I had a torrent where all the filesnames were fuarrrky and had no extension so instead if manually renaming all 50-some of them, wrote a python script to rename them and add extension so it was 1.PDF, 2.PDF, 3.PDF....

For fun, try a small game like pong. Then extend it and add your own twist to it. Don't try something too complex, your first program won't be an online FPS MMO RPG.

Don't lose motivation when you hit a wall. Stop and think. Break the problem into steps. For example: don't google, "how to make a calculator", instead break it down to "how to get input from a user", and "how to multiply 2 numbers".

There's are endless resources on the youtubes, forums, stack overflow, and codecademy type places. Also hit up IRC, freenode has tons of programming channels.

One thing that fuarrrked me when starting to learn was it was hard to pick a language when people talked about it on the chans and forums. Everyone and their cat has an opinion "Java is slow and soykaf, python is for babies, real men code in c, no real men code in assembly, your not a programmer if you don't use haskell, etc". That's all horsehit. You choose the right tool for the right job. I'm writing an android app -> Java
I'm writing a utility script -> powershell/bash/python
I'm writing a memory forensics tool -> c++
I'm writing an LED matrix driver on a microcontroller -> c
It doesn't matter what you use ultimately, each language has their pros/cons and uses. The syntax is the only real difference, the concepts of variables, loops, decisions and arrays, etc are all the same with perhaps some nuances.

My personal favorites are Java, c# and python. So my bias recommendation for a first language is python because the syntax is simple and elegant, tons of libraries and community support, can really quickly prototype and build something.

Once it clicks, there's nothing more satisfying than your code compiling and doing exactly what you wanted, or overcoming a bug you've been fighting with for hours. Feel like a god. At least that's been my experience. Good luck and have fun.

Some things that help with phone battlestation pictures:

Turn your monitor's backlight down for pictures; the lowest setting is usually still too bright to show up well on photos. (If still too bright, turning on the lights can help ;)

CLEAN YOUR LENS (breathe on it, then wipe it gently with a clean T-shirt)

Find a way to prop the camera up, and take the picture with voice controls or timer if you have it (so it's not shaking from your touch)

Use the HDR setting if you can manage ^ that

>white Plasti-dip removed from keyboard
>swapped out mouse for an ambidextrous one (Nixeus Revel)

I just moved across state lines and I'm pretty damn pleased with my battlestation.

Picked up an old etower for $10 today, which has a clean install of Win98 and runs like a charm! So I did some restructuring of my battlestation.

The Thinkpad is my daily driver and runs Arch (dual boot with Win7). The other laptop was my Linux learner box, and has switched primarily to media/non-minimalist use, as well as being used for gaming, with windows 8 booting from a USB hub. Gaming over Steam link connected to TV.
Not sure what I'll be doing with the Etower yet.
It's also hard to see, but on the other side of the desk, there's an old IBM Aptiva ($5) with FreeBSD on it, for Unix practice.
There's a Pi connected to the TV, as well as an Apple TV (which was a gift! It's more or less only used for streaming VLC, pictured). Pi runs Jessie/Debian as well as Kali.

Old Mac is running Ubuntu Studio and is mainly used for audio manipulation and recording. May wipe it and put on a different, novel Linux installation.

Now I just need to get a better chair - this chair was $3 at a thrift store, but it's not the kindest to my back.

This uses one half of my room. The other half is quite /comfy/: what's not pictured includes bookshelves accesible from bed, an adorable sleeping puppy, and the acoustic I keep in here.

Pretty much everything you see has come from a thrift store, including the line-drawings of San Francisco - which mitigates my homesickness and was a pleasant surprise to find in the middle of the desert. All monitors were $10 or under. Surgemasters were $5 each. Even that typewriter (I also have another on aforementioned bookshelf) was under $20, which was a fuarrrkin' steal.

This is the corner of my room, and I'm pretty proud about it. The computer and the laptop (a Lenovo Y700) are dual booting Arch and Windows, and the computer is shown running Windows with a wallpaper i got from here. It's mainly because, as you can see in the picture, i like gaming a little too much. Arch is for everything else.
