In this moment, I only have 3 computers running. The first one is for recreative purposes (that's why windows). The second is for small projects on linux. And the final one... Just nostalgia, sometimes I use it like a server and let him working for long periods of time, it uses W98.

Wait a minute... I remember that "feel the bern" hat from the last thread. Is that you kalyx?

i do have a cool IBM tower tho

how do you even sit at that

I have a comfy chair that I roll around in, I usually just push some thing over if I want to do something useful or take my laptop and sit in at a coffee shop.

File: 1471085036007.png (953.55 KB, 200x198, download.png)

I was more concerned with those two towers right where your legs would be if you wanted to look at that monitor.

regardless here is mine. Actual desk is reasonably tidy but that back left corner is a horrifying rats nest of cables. laptop is a macbook pro 2012 running Linux Mint, I keep a small up to date osx partition on it just in case. The tower at the left is a my home server running CentOS 7, basically just NAS/FTP/media but I run odd jobs on it as well like DHCP. Also I'm planing on starting some more public facing services like a telnet bbs but we will see. The big tower on the right is a botnet 10 gayman rig but I don't game anymore so it's really just an over powered web browser.

mission hill is a great show

Keeping electronics (pc case in this..case) on the floor is indeed a sign of disgusting human being. You only need to raise them few centimeters from the ground to avoid 80% of dust.

how do you watch films/chinese cartoons with your monitors vertically?

Is that a movie or show in the second photo on the left monitor if so what's the name?

I had something similar to that but i couldn't ever get comfortable that low to the floor. It still looks cool though.

Sintel, it's a short animated movie under Creative Commons

We use it and other movies on board ships to test out our TV solution, as well as showing off the quality of streaming via both internal IPTV and Coaxial networks

fair enough, thanks for the answer

where can i find decent crts these days?

Trash bins.

You can't: those who care about certain picture qualities, have horded all the good monitors (because its a long wait for successor tech, it seems, so you can't rely on single monitor to work for the next 20 years).

I found these at an it guys house who used to work for my university. He horded them until he had to move then was just giving them away

Oldest models are not that hard to fix. You can get the parts at some electronics repair shops for almost nothing.

OP is definitly Kalyx

>Kansas City hat

>Feel the Bern hat.

I met him in person and once he was wearing that Komrade hat.

Shame on you Kalyx, for using Dune as a raise for you speaker! That is a sacred book, not deserving of such indignance.

I see a lot of older monitors being used in battlestations. How good are they and what do you guys use them for? I have an old Dell monitor and a Dell e310 and was wondering if I can put them to use in my new battlestation.

They're heavy and only pretty to tech nerds. The quality is pretty shit. I would really recommend just buying a new monitor if you can afford it otherwise just grab one and a vga to Hdmi cable

ive been living in this closet for almost 3 months.
all i have to pay for is food. i can almost stand up straight so thats pretty dope.

the bed itsnt bad. i like sleeping on the floor.

im really proud of the desk i made out of a travel case for a bass guitar, a side table that someone threw out, some storage bins and paint cans to raise it. its surprisingly conformable and usable. function > form

this isnt a bad life. the hardest part is actually that the power goes out almost once a week here, sometimes for like 8 hours. its the lack of internet during outages that kills me. i need my fix.

Tiny living spaces are underrated. I spent a long time on submarines, and now I'm honestly uncomfortable in normal sized houses. I have a tiny 450sqft apartment and it still feels like I have a ton of wasted space. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to buy and live in a normal house at this point

File: 1471749709596.png (444.84 KB, 200x113, aug2016_desk.jpg)

Got myself a 4th monitor and a new keyboard.
The monitor on the far right isn't working atm. Like the stupid ass I am, I forgot to get another display port converted.

nice eurobeat

do you live in a rural area?

comfy af

I really like this

finally the internet is back. huge power outage, a bunch of polls burnt down in a forest fire pretty close. took out the internet for 3 days.

i quite like this way of living. honestly i could use a little bit more space cuz i do kinda bump around in here and it gets really hot, but its not too bad. i dont want a house. im considering saving up for some kind of camper or van, put solar panels on the roof and live in parking lots for a while, not sure..
i don't know if i could handle submarine living.
whats the longest time you've spent submerged?

semi rural. its a collection of cottages on the side of a lake. 45 minutes from the nearest city. nice area.

i do odd jobs. just did 4 hours of lawn mowing. couple days ago i chopped and stacked wood for a few hours. its not much but my only expenses are food currently so i get by just fine. im almost finished my first web dev contract. a simple online marketplace using wordpress and some ecommerce plugin (garbage i know, but it handles all the paypal/online payment for my client and saves me dev time). $600 upon completion. so that's groceries for a while, very excited. i dont much care for webdev, im trying to find a programming job, but ill do some contracts till then, build up a portfolio of sorts. one day....

I was thinking of getting two of the AOC 23 inch IPS monitors, is that a good idea?

4 months submerged. Its pretty rare to be under that long, at least in a fast attack boat, be we were doing secret squirrel shit and pur relief boat had mechanical issues. We damn near ran out of food, and had pancakes amd rice 4 meals a day for the last few weeks. Havent had pancakes since then.

that sounds somewhat terrifying. i can imagine they probably do some sort of psych evaluation to make sure people don't snap after months of close quarters with no escape. finally coming out of there would feel amazing, i would run for the trees.

They do. The attrition rate is crazy high. I dont have any concrete numbers, but it would not suprise me if they were second only to SEAL/SWCC.

To put it into perspective, my boot camp division was ~95 people, 14 of us billeted for subs. 9 made it to submarine school. 3 graduated all the required courses and made it to the fleet. 1 had a breakdown and was kicked out, the second purposly failed a drug test in order to get out. So that left me out of 14 people who "made it".

But honestly, for me at least, you are kept so goddamn busy underway you dont have a lot of time to really think about where you are and the crazy shit youre doing.

Both aren doing anything interesting other than running openwrt. The one on the right is my actual LAN. The one on the left is just a spare that there to remind me to use it to set up a meshnet now I'm downtow but idk how to do that.

The yellow cable goes to my RPI that's just an always on server hooked up to 4 spare laptop HDDs. The router port forwards ssh to that RPI.
The blue ETH comes from my modem from across the ceiling because the ISP contractor gave me exactly 3 feet of coax cable for my modem and its on the other side of the room.

I figure I would wall mount a bunch of tech then make the ETH cables look like art by making them go in pretty patterns.

nice, I have a couple old wrt54gs laying around too, ive been looking for a project

Been working on it lately. I like to keep a markdown file of my progress like I'm writing a blogpost of my projects. I'll post it later in /sec/ and see if anyone can find some security holes in my design.

General setup will be:
- All MY devices are connected to the MASTER router,
- All guest devices will be connected to the SLAVE router
- All configuration on BOTH routers will only be accessible from devices on the MASTER network
- Devices on the SLAVE network can only communicate with each other or the internet.
- SLAVE router will run CJDNS, which is the last step. Apparently you can install it with opkg.

i feel like i just saw you post on /g/ today

I posted my desktop on /g/ last night to ask for some colour+font tips, and it became the new desktop thread for a few hours.

Afraid it doesn't work, yeah. Want to get myself a WRT1900ac but it's hard to balance out the cost.
You can still do mesh networking on the WRT54GL though, OLSR or something.

Oh ok, I just got a new job too!
They called me yesterday and told me they were going to pay me even more than the original offer was.

congrats kathyx

Seeing a Mac like that is kinda cool. Makes me consider to buy one, until seeing specs/price. Do you cut out plexiglass to cover it, please do, or it will be e-waste very soon. Making you buy antoher one causing you to get broke again, and not being able to pay $55 to keep this site up.

Just the computer room. Naturally it isn't as clean by the time I'm posting this.

I really like this, I don't really care about the battlestation but the room is giving me some ideas.

If you don't mind, is this like a 1/2 room apartment?

For a sake of scale, what's the rough square footage of your room, it kinda looks like you have like a single room. Maybe this is like a finished basement, since I notice what appears to be support beams all prettied up. But you clearly have separate rooms since between the shots you have different shades of paint plus the carpet is different too.

I'm going to guess you also have like a four foot wide couch, and a fairly large table maybe 4/5 foot table.

Sorry for sperging like that, I really like how you got everything, it looks nice. I do have a few things though;

Carpet is the nastiest flooring choice would rather use hardwood or tile with rugs I can beat clean.

>Entertainment center

Completely subjective but it screams Weekends Only or Walmart. I guess I have a thing for more classic wooden cabinet designs for my place.

>All of those tvs/montors

If this is a single room apartment, then I don't know how you can sleep at night. I try to keep my electronics away from my sleeping area.

>CRT television

I see what appears to be a Gamecube and possibly a Wii, so this is understandable, but the raw weight of what I can assume is maybe a 17-22 inch CRT must being killing that desk. I hope that's real wood.

Don't think I'm being too harsh, I love it. I can't wait to post my space.

This is actually the basement of a full house from the early 70's. I'm still in college in my hometown so it's not really economical to live on my own. It's a half basement that's been multipurposed many different times so it's got a lot of hodgepodge soykaf in it. In addition, most of the furniture is the unused stuff from the floors above, so less "Walmart" and more Goodwill.

I actually hate the carpet, and really want to replace it with either full shag carpet or tile; one of the closets flooded years ago so parts of the carpet by the door is really nasty.

My bed area is receded slightly so the only thing I can see from it is the TV; I'm good at keeping them off so it's no big deal.

I actually am slightly worried about this. I put most of the weight on the drawers below it so it's for the most part fine, but it's still a cheap desk.

Love these tiny keyboards, I want one, but last time I got a board without number keys I missed them hard. Thinking of getting a separate keypad.

How do you cope? Or do you just not miss the numpad?

Did it ever occur to you, that not every imageboard user is a 12 year old?

Gameboy was discontinued before any living 12 year old was even born.

He may be implying the reverse. That the gameboy is quite old, as is the user.

oh... meaning that Lain had it all these years. I feel a little stupid now.

File: 1476248745718-1.png (401.5 KB, 200x142, bayjnblue.jpg)

I never really used the numpad tbh, I've used netbooks more than anything, and my glorious x61 doesn't have a num pad.

The one thing I do miss sometimes are the arrow keys. Almost everything I use has vim like directions (h,j,k,l) which has made it manageable. However, I am thinking about getting something like a Leopold 660 to replace the pok3r/

I had one of those thinkpads and it was good but the hd corrupted, I think I got one shipped from Asia and it didnt work sux

My first impression when I saw the second picture was that you had rooted your ereader and were using your keyboard to manage a terminal on the eink display.

I really despise those small, limited keyset keyboards, the lack of arrow keys or numpad is something i can't live with. I'm genuinely curious why they are so popular, especially among the anons on imageboards and what pushes people to keep buying them.

Hah, that would be cool!

If you do a lot of straight typing and use programs with vim like directions a 60% keyboard is awesome, you never have to leave the home row. They are also really well made objects, my pok3r has a solid metal case and is in itself a satisfying item. The cherry on the 60% cake is that they are a meme and divide people thus cause a lot of !!!fun!!! on image boards!

The trend towards smaller keyboards is just part of the trend towards smaller everything. A lot of people never use the number pad anyway; having no arrow keys is a bit extreme though.

>especially among the anons on imageboards

...who were no doubt once part of some 1337 h4x0r underground amirite xD

I mean they do have arrow keys... the just require a function button to be used.

60% aren't new either.

Yeah I'm pretty dependent on one handed arrow key action. What's f*cking me up lately is this new deck I have uses the F keys for new things like brightness or play/pause so traditional actions like F11 and F5 don't don't do what they used to unless I'm home with an external keyboard plugged in.

I'm jealous of this

Really nice setup, really captures that late 90's/early 2000's feeling

I can live without a numberpad, since theres still a whole row of number but no arrow keys? Nah dude, they should have at least some little ones like on a small laptop. I'd sacrifice some bottom right keys for arrow keys.

>60% keyboard talk
I'm afraid of buying one because I know if I let myself I will become a crazy keyboard person with stacks of nice looking keyboards that never actually see use. I like pushing buttons, I like feeling different kinds of buttons, and I think keyboards look cool. Thank goodness for my lack of cash.
The form factor gives me zero issues. I use vim keys for everything and don't use the number pad. 60% is just trimming away the fat for me. Certainly not for everyone though.
>function keys using alternate actions by default
I once had a laptop where I could change that in the bios. Take a look, if you haven't already.

Now I wanna buy a new keyboard, although mostly because my current stock Dell Keyboard has like a soykafload of dust and stuff in it and its just a bitch to clean.

For me it's portability and size

Yotsuba&! I love that manga!

I love your stuff. Is your thinkpad librebooted?

Why do you do with this radio? Listening local stations?

It's my favourite at the moment, mainly as it's one of the few magna I can read in 日本語 at the moment!
No my x61 isn't libre booted, it's not yet compatible, one day maybe, I'm tempted to get an x60 so I can have libre boot and a godly screen ratio.

It's a shortwave receiver so I'm using it for the opposite, international broadcasts. It's a dying medium but there are still some broadcasts that are worth tuning into.

And that's why, kids, you always remove exif before posting any pictures on the internet, and for god's sake most phones have the option to at least hide the GPS location on exifs.

omg #expectus amirite xD

What is anyone possibly going to do to him based on that information?

find a guy on that campus wearing those headphones or using that laptop
say something autistic and lain related
eventually become friends
hang out and do cyberpunk stuff together
be a qt couple 4ever

Not really, that's cheap damage control at the best, if you don't care about giving out your location and stuff to identify you on the internet, whatever.

Implying that wouldn't lead to rape.

I would find that person and give them a high five, and if they are really cool, I'd give them a hug.

there's no place to rest your hands in front of the keyboard when typing

nigga are u trying to get carpal tunnel on purpose

> Not 31555
Aren't arm-rests, padding and whatever meant to prevent that kind of stuff?

You're supposed to have your wrists above the level of the keycaps while typing. You can get padded stuff to hold your wrists up. Most of the time, however, your wrists should not be resting on anything while typing.

are the two screens connected to the same laptop?

Yes, my main laptop is the one with two screens connected, then on the right is another laptop with one screen connected to THAT. I mainly use that one for (unfortunately) playing emulated games and such.

Are you using some kind of adapter or your laptop has 2 video interfaces?
also what's so unfortunate about that?

My main laptop has both an HDMI and Mini DP port.
Also what's unfortunate, is that the laptop I use for games runs Windows and I wish I could run linux on it.

I still have this glowing prebuilt PC from when I was younger. I've replaced everything but the motherboard and the case. When the sharper image store closed down a few years ago I snagged a mannequin head and I put my headset on that when I'm not home. Ergonomics is key here. My keyboard and mouse are on a under-desk mounted thing that slides in and out and also pivots left and right. Keeping your keyboard on a slant with a wrist rest and at elbow height while sitting comfy is key. The stuff about monitor angle in the pic isn't nearly as important as that.

damm you lainchan anons

Looks like a noppo mini. A good little keyboard.

I like that keyboard. Does anyone know what it is?

Tracked it down for you, or something similar, it's the IBM 1397000 keyboard but the one in the image looks like it has replaced keycaps and a custom paint or surfacing job.

I see, thank you.

I code for fun and learning and mental stimulation. I think one of the best ways to learn is to build something useful for yourself. Like a small utility script to backup some folders to an external drive, or remove empty folders. Try to automate something you find yourself doing constantly, like for example the driver for my WiFi adapter is wack and it needs to be disabled then enabled every time the computer wakes from sleep so I wrote a small powershell script that does that when the machine wakes.

Or one time I had a torrent where all the filesnames were fuarrrky and had no extension so instead if manually renaming all 50-some of them, wrote a python script to rename them and add extension so it was 1.PDF, 2.PDF, 3.PDF....

For fun, try a small game like pong. Then extend it and add your own twist to it. Don't try something too complex, your first program won't be an online FPS MMO RPG.

Don't lose motivation when you hit a wall. Stop and think. Break the problem into steps. For example: don't google, "how to make a calculator", instead break it down to "how to get input from a user", and "how to multiply 2 numbers".

There's are endless resources on the youtubes, forums, stack overflow, and codecademy type places. Also hit up IRC, freenode has tons of programming channels.

One thing that fuarrrked me when starting to learn was it was hard to pick a language when people talked about it on the chans and forums. Everyone and their cat has an opinion "Java is slow and soykaf, python is for babies, real men code in c, no real men code in assembly, your not a programmer if you don't use haskell, etc". That's all horsehit. You choose the right tool for the right job. I'm writing an android app -> Java
I'm writing a utility script -> powershell/bash/python
I'm writing a memory forensics tool -> c++
I'm writing an LED matrix driver on a microcontroller -> c
It doesn't matter what you use ultimately, each language has their pros/cons and uses. The syntax is the only real difference, the concepts of variables, loops, decisions and arrays, etc are all the same with perhaps some nuances.

My personal favorites are Java, c# and python. So my bias recommendation for a first language is python because the syntax is simple and elegant, tons of libraries and community support, can really quickly prototype and build something.

Once it clicks, there's nothing more satisfying than your code compiling and doing exactly what you wanted, or overcoming a bug you've been fighting with for hours. Feel like a god. At least that's been my experience. Good luck and have fun.

It is a 122 key Model M, you can get modern USB versions from Unicomp here: http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/UB40B5A

I have since replaced that keyboard with a Realforce 87U though, completely different keyboards, I personally think that the realforce is a lot more comfortable.

Although it is completely off-topic, I wonder how much Zoom recorder cost?

the h4n was like <£200 when I got it, nearer £150 iirc. I got all the little addon bits, like remote and dead cat etc. Well worth it, super good recorder. Just get some good rechargeable batteries for it.

Are you in a cave or just some old ass house? Either way, looks awesome.

Nice kirby's

I see, thank you. A bit expensive for me now. Does it have 3.5mm line in? Most of my equipment runs on minijacks and I got no XLR things or even adapters.

I have a Zoom H1N and I love that thing, only runs $99 USD, if that's more in your budget area. It has 3.5mm in and out.

That is fuarrrking cozy!

I love my Zoom H1. It looks and feels like a plastic toy, but it's got awesome audio quality for the price. I especially love the manual control over input levels. You don't see that on many $99 recorders.

I got the NEC monitor the same way, and they were both free!

That's a soykafton of stuff.
What would you do if you had to move?

Close! It is a Baofeng UV-5R. It hardly gets any reception inside my room, though. Can't expect much from a $25 transceiver.

Not him, but cardboard boxes are good for putting things in.

A Haiti and a Quebec flag? I'm confused.

I can't tell if that's a small .22 or a shotgun there in the right, which one is it?
I also keep a Mossberg 500 like that in my room.

Get a new antenna for it, I have exactly a UV-5R and after I got an aftermarket antenna (Nagoya NA-771) my reception got much better even inside my apartment.

Sure, but... idk, personally I wouldn't bring so many things for a temporary situation.
Too paranoid to do not live lightly

Whatcha workin on there?

You should see the amount of soykaf some people bring, its crazy. Last year a friend of mine actually brought up a budget moving van full of stuff.

I think I am more on the lesser side (that desk is actually the majority of stuff I have). I have some clothes in my closet, my skis and boots, and that is about it.

Wait.. you got a DP to VGA adapter?

Does your GPU not have an ADC; couldn't you just use a DVI-A to VGA passthrough cable?

I currently do graphic design and front-end web development, but I am currently enrolled in an MITx course to start learning computer science and programming as well.

Why do you ask? If it's the monitors, then I will tell you that three monitors help with absolutely everything. Absolutely. Everything. You won't believe how much time you waste windowing and scanning your taskbar until you make the switch.

Wow, My phone has a bad camera.

My laptop sits next to me when I'm not taking it around. My desk sort of is like kicking dead whales down the beach for long periods of time, because there isn't enough space for my legs, and I have long ones on top of that, but it fits in the corner nicely.

CM quickfire rapid blueswitch with some 'tweaks'
I'm a half in half coffee

Some things that help with phone battlestation pictures:

Turn your monitor's backlight down for pictures; the lowest setting is usually still too bright to show up well on photos. (If still too bright, turning on the lights can help ;)

CLEAN YOUR LENS (breathe on it, then wipe it gently with a clean T-shirt)

Find a way to prop the camera up, and take the picture with voice controls or timer if you have it (so it's not shaking from your touch)

Use the HDR setting if you can manage ^ that

>Bricked LG G3 a couple months ago, never bothered to take it to cellular repair shop after trying to fix it myself
>stuck with crappy phone with a practically unusable camera
>no recent battlestation pictures because I don't really care anymore

I'm just going to post one from a few months prior of fuarrrking my phone up.

It's basically the same except:
>Purchased cheap Korean 144hz/1440p monitor (Pixio PX277)
>Acer monitor flipped vertically and located to the left of Korean monitor
>white Plasti-dip removed from keyboard
>swapped out mouse for an ambidextrous one (Nixeus Revel)
>Thinkpad X220
>some Dota 2 micro plushies

While browsing through my folder, I felt like posting two slightly older ones as well. Looking at these makes me realize how often it varies, lol. I did move about a year ago, though.

In the second picture on the keyboard, is there a particular reason you swapped out your 5 and 6 keys? Also, I really dig the wood paneling in the first picture, looks super comfy.

Those are my 'osu!' keys. I play it quite a bit, so the texture and color difference of the two keys help me out. I have a new keyset arriving in about a month and it might look more tacky than it already does. I'm probably going to swap them out with two more fitting colors when the keyset arrives.

I really miss the wood paneling. It WAS super comfy.

neat! I hope one day I will have a room with comfy wood paneling.

Personally, I rarely miss the numpad. I know a lot of people get/build a separate usb numpad.

What E-Reader do you have?

This is pretty much my ideal setup. I like it a lot.

Thank you very much.
I've put some work into it over the last months to improve it and I'm not quite there where I want it to be yet.

I still want to add some drawers, so I don't have so much random clutter laying around, and I need to invest some money into a new mouse eventually, mine is getting issues with the middle mouse button

Why did you post your hardware's specs? It's not a 4chan, noone gives a crap about it.

it might interest some people, the others can just ignore it. Whats your problem?

No need to be rude, go soykaf elsewhere.

I just moved across state lines and I'm pretty damn pleased with my battlestation.

Picked up an old etower for $10 today, which has a clean install of Win98 and runs like a charm! So I did some restructuring of my battlestation.

The Thinkpad is my daily driver and runs Arch (dual boot with Win7). The other laptop was my Linux learner box, and has switched primarily to media/non-minimalist use, as well as being used for gaming, with windows 8 booting from a USB hub. Gaming over Steam link connected to TV.
Not sure what I'll be doing with the Etower yet.
It's also hard to see, but on the other side of the desk, there's an old IBM Aptiva ($5) with FreeBSD on it, for Unix practice.
There's a Pi connected to the TV, as well as an Apple TV (which was a gift! It's more or less only used for streaming VLC, pictured). Pi runs Jessie/Debian as well as Kali.

Old Mac is running Ubuntu Studio and is mainly used for audio manipulation and recording. May wipe it and put on a different, novel Linux installation.

Now I just need to get a better chair - this chair was $3 at a thrift store, but it's not the kindest to my back.

This uses one half of my room. The other half is quite /comfy/: what's not pictured includes bookshelves accesible from bed, an adorable sleeping puppy, and the acoustic I keep in here.

Pretty much everything you see has come from a thrift store, including the line-drawings of San Francisco - which mitigates my homesickness and was a pleasant surprise to find in the middle of the desert. All monitors were $10 or under. Surgemasters were $5 each. Even that typewriter (I also have another on aforementioned bookshelf) was under $20, which was a fuarrrkin' steal.

This is the corner of my room, and I'm pretty proud about it. The computer and the laptop (a Lenovo Y700) are dual booting Arch and Windows, and the computer is shown running Windows with a wallpaper i got from here. It's mainly because, as you can see in the picture, i like gaming a little too much. Arch is for everything else.

(Reposted since i forgot to delete the exiff from one the pictures, sorry)

I really like that Maho nendo.

If that disassembled thing is a chromebook (and I think it is) you are indeed disgusting. Your desk is fine tho.
