What is playable framerate? Ioquake3 (I use original, non-gpl'd system data) never goes below 60fps on this system, usually stays over 100fps (using 1024x786@100Hz). I use the nouveau kernel driver + mesa.
Non-free UT on the other hands doesn't work so great and it doesn't work correctly because of ABI breakage.

WindowMaker doesn't have GNUStep deps, at least not on Debian.
It has its own widget set (WINGS) and basically depends on X11, image libs and a terminal emulator.
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/wmaker
That said I agree that, while featureful, the GNUStep stuff is too slow to be practical. On a much faster machine it might be okay but it isn't usable on a 350Mhz Pentium II, and considering I can use Gtk+ stuff on there that's not a good thing.

I don't understand. Wmaker (and anything using motif toolkit) works brilliantly with my K6@300MHz, FX5200 (nouveau+mesa), 512MB RAM setup and especially when compared to anything using gimp toolkit (2.* is almost usable, but 3.* isn't).

File: 1489851115478.png (853.39 KB, 173x200, out.webm)

Greetings lains,

Thanks to random bits of shell I've pilfered from around the web, I''ve put together a couple of scripts here that convert & upscale a gif or webm, and map to the root window as a background. set-bg $gif does the conversion on $gif and puts the result in ~/.back . play-bg just runs xwinwrap and mpv to play ~/.back .

>>> https://w1r3.net/egBeKn.gz

These scripts aren't too different from the other random implementations lying around, but I didn't see one that specifically converted & scaled the output, and just wrapping a naked & unarmed gif or webm to the root window takes an ungodly amount of CPU time. Enabling hardware acceleration for mpv & converting the file to h264 lets the background run smoothly with about 3% of the CPU time, on my laptop with Intel soykafset graphics.

set-bg needs to be executed with bash. Dependencies are gifsicle, xwinwrap, and mpv & ffmpeg compiled to use whatever your appropriate graphics hw accel is. set-bg uses vaapi to encode by default, if you have nvidia or ATI of course you'll want to change that, as well as the vaapi-specific scaling format option

Hope you find it useful lainons

Pictured is my new EXWM (Emacs X Window Manager) setup with the Darktooth theme and fish running in ansi-term. I did use (and still have installed) StumpWM but am using EXWM for now since it meshes much better with Emacs, naturally of course.

Setting up EXWM to work the way you'd like is a bit of a pain, similar to StumpWM in this regard, but once it's running it's quite a pleasure. I can't recommend it enough. Ah, and one last thing: If anyone needs help binding media keys (e.g. XF86Tools, XF86AudioMute, etc.) I can show you how I did mine since the wiki doesn't give good enough info on this--rather important--feature.

Nope, i've made this homepage myself and it's really simple . But if you want to - i can upload my configs to github.
Firefox theme is twily's theme with edited colors. You can find it here https://userstyles.org/styles/102262/twily-s-powerline-firefox-css

I figured this would be thread where all the knowledgable people hang out, so I'll just ask here:
What's the easiest bar to rice and customize that works well with i3?
I used to use xmobar but that seems to have some problems with slim.

i3blocks fits your criteria. Easy to integrate and easily customized. Can post my set up, later.

lemonbar is quite nice, quite easy to do since you just pipe your content into it, I'll post my rice+bar script later

rofi -show run -sidebar-mode
run it like that. shows workspace windows on i3 and other WMs and frequent ssh sessions get saved for quick access.
Tab navigation is Alt+number by default.
