So I have a huge list of weeb soykaf thanks to you guys.
Now we need to cut it down to a more reasonable size and remove all the soykaf from it.

Since it's so long I've decided we will go a section or two at a time; so for now we will focus on the anime.

http://pastebin.com/NEwAXbS7

There's about 88 entries in the list, we should probably cut it down to 45 or less, especially considering that some of these entries count as multiple anime series.
So basically:

Tl;Dr: Submit corrections and what you think should be removed (and why).
We can argue if said thing should actually be removed.

Because yuri is the highest form of love.

I think:Why don't we have a yuri general? ITT we celebrate the love between two or more women.

Rules for this thread:
1)NOTHING LEWD
2)NOTHING LEWD
3)If it is TOO LEWD for lainchan in general, then it is TOO LEWD for this thread.

ITT you can discuss anything yuri.
You can post yuri related internet memes.
You can ask about yuri anime/manga.
You can post fluffy diabetes cute images of female pairs kissing, holding hands, hugging, sharing scarves and similar romantic stuff(as long as it does not break the before mentioned rules).
You can post your own yuri stories.
You can recommend yuri anime or manga.
Anything somehow related to yuri.

So let me start:
Can you rationalise to us why you like yuri?
What themes do you like in yuri manga or anime? Or rather what kind of yuri anime or manga do you like?
What themes do you not like in yuri?
And of course, which are your favourite pairings?

I'll start us off. Now, I'm not the kind of guy to ONLY HAVE ONE WAIFU FOR ETERNITY AND FOREVER, but I really like R. Dorothy Wayneright. She might be an android, but I like to think she can feel emotion (it's even hinted at in the series). I guess I kind of have a soft-spot for kuudere girls in general, but Dorothy is special to me.

there's a lot more to it than just that. it's subtle, but kino is changed over the course of the story, bringing along bits of each country they pass through. see the extras as well once you're done with the series proper; they help flesh that out a lot. avoid "the country of illness for you", though. it was animated differently and in general just doesn't match up with the rest of anything and felt like a poorly-constructed money grab

>The art is rather ugly unfortunately.

i liked it...
it fits the characters she meets themselves: seemingly harmless / cartoony and things, but with much that isn't readily apparent. also, being simplified the way it is matches with the simplified, allegorical, parable-like story telling, where many characters are described only through their Roles in the story and have no unnecessary characteristics.

I don't think any of us want anything new. I even don't want it to be made by hollywood because it will almost inevitably be Michael Bayesque. If anything it should be like an art movie overloaded with philosophy, the reverse of watered down for the masses. I hope Batou will spew philosophical one liners like he did in Innocence as well. But we both know that with hollywood we will not get that. We will probably get a romantic sub plot, a sex scene and lots of explosions. And maybe like 15 minutes of high quality mindfuck philosophy stuff(and I am being optimistic here).

If it's not based in another country but it teaches you about the customs of some non-japan country, that is ok.
Fantasy worlds do not count.
Stuff like Kiniro mosaic where you learn about the customs of both Japan and some other however does count.

Can we have an old anime thread? Anything from before 90 is a go.

Post your favourite old soykaff, discuss different shows, recommend shows, etc.
Pic included is probably one of my favourite anime of all time. It's called "Armour hunter Mellowlink" and it's about a dude with a massive rifle taking down mechs singlehandedly with guerrilla warfare.
The basic story isn't too much to talk about. Guy gets betrayed, his squad dies and he is blamed for it, gets revenge. The characters and how it is presented are quite good though.
The action scenes and animation are where this one really shines. Each action scene is expertly thought out and animated.
Sadly after this one was aired the guys who made it lost everything to do with the project. To this day the only uploads of it are recorded off of some dudes old CRT and then subbed.

While it may have been the intent of Chiaki J. Konaka et al that the game, manga, and anime were each self-contained. The manga presented in Yoshitoshi Abe's "An Omnipresence in the Wired" may show a differing intent on the matter.
For those that have played the game, there is a missing memory file (DC1029) that happens to be the subtitle of the manga. The manga serves as a possible bridge between the two as <spoiler>Lain realizes her memories are being overwritten by Eiri Masami (who isn't mentioned in the game). Lain kills herself in the game, is resurrected and used by Eiri Masami, is given an artificial body and family, etc.</spoiler>
Lain is an artificial being given form (a bit more than this explained in spoiler) by Eiri to bring about his godhood. Lain's family is a fabrication, her sister acts as a conduit for the wired, the knights are trying to break the barrier between the world of thoughts/consiousness and the physical/natural world. Lain comes to learn that she is being used, Eiri is a false god, Lain is the only being born of the wired that could be considered a true goddess. Lain understands the need for human privacy and identity, re-writes reality and prevents the formation of the knights and protocol 7. She continues to exist as an unknown goddess that watches over her children.

Thread must have aged and expired. In the future: click on the board you think it is under, click catalog in the lower left hand corner of the screen, then type a keyword into the search box in catalog (eg. "neotokyo").

OK, that sounds nice, thank you.

Is there a stance towards hentai containing underage or strongly underage-looking characters, or rape (whether underage or not)?

>>6091
I don't know, and I wonder if I can find out since it's been a couple days now, plus it could be that all characters were officially 18+. They weren't loli characters, and "young girls" may have sounded wrong, though it looked like a school setting and they were probably meant to be teenagers. And the plot was about some creepy middle-aged man manipulating them into sex. According to the reactions in the IRC channel, he was forcing them to fuck a dog, too.

I can still understand the "lol so funny" reactions people give to this kind of stuff, since I was kind of within such culture myself for a long time, but recently I've taken to looking at everything from a more political and sociological perspective, and I kinda can't stand it anymore to be honest. I'm like one of those grumpy old people or "normies" who "just don't get it" now, even though I used to very much "get" it.

Gonna have to echo what others are saying. Just enjoy the anime you like, which ever way you like, stay away from most anime forums/imageboards/etc and don't really worry about it.

One thing I've quickly learned about the anime fandom is the stupid amount of elitism that comes from it. Like the whole dub vs sub bullshit, where the "hardcore" fans will swear up and down that the Japanese voices are better. Or the whole torrent vs Netflix thing or one series vs another series.

To be frank the best anime fans tend to be the casual ones, they have okay tastes overall because they choose anime they will like based on shows they like already and aren't obnoxious shits about it. But those kinds of people are really rare.

here is a chart of stuff done by chiaki konaka (the guy who did script for lain), it includes scripts and screenplays

he basically writes horror and paranormal things now. early on he liked cyberpunk, robots, and digital themes but seems to have moved away from it

the stuff he had the most decisions over were Malice@Doll and Armitage III, being in both cases the original creator, scriptwriter (and series composition i believe). has anyone seen them? did you also know he wrote digimon tamers? i grew up watching that before i even knew about lain, it's strange

You're missing Fun Fun Pharmacy, a 1998 children's anime for which Konaka personally wrote every single episode's script. It was also directed by Yukio Kaizawa, who later went on to direct Digimon Tamers. And the character designs were done by Ikuko Ito, who did the designs for Magic User's Club and Princess Tutu (the latter for which he wrote several episodes).

Personally, I think both Tamers and Pharmacy are some of his best work. I would love to see him team up with Kaizawa for a children's anime again.

Here's a more complete list of stuff he's worked on:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=3612
It's actually still an incomplete list however, you'll have to go searching in Japanese for an actually complete one.

Only 2 episodes in, but I know I'm going to love this series.

It's so un-animelike. It's gritty, has compelling characters, the protagonist is morally ambiguous, the show avoids tired anime-only tropes, the music and the setting are very climatic.

I really want to see how it fares being dubbed into Italian (even though I don't know the language).

  No.6215

Oh my god yes. It's epic, it's right up there with Death Note in terms of suspense and quality in writing. Never in my life have I watched a dubbed series but I might rewatch this in italian dub when time comes, thanks for the heads up.

I'm not sure why you think otaku culture revolves around English language imageboards. The argument was that having a waifu is a joke because some people in the English language imageboard community thought it was a joke.

I'm hoping to find more 90s/00s cyberpunk anime, TV shows, and films to watch. I know that Lain is very unique, but I was hoping someone could recommend me some shows with similar qualities. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I was unable to find any sort of Lainchan recommended list, aside from this: http://pastebin.com/NEwAXbS7 . That list is so general, though, and it doesn't really focus on Cyberpunk or surrealism.

Surrealism, philosophy, and drug use are all definite pluses if you're wondering.

Even non-cyberpunk would be OK, depending on whether or not it featured said surrealism, etc. Paranoia Agent is very good and strikes some similar chords, for example.

Kuuchu Buranko.

I love the weird animation, and its psychological aspects.

Jigoku Shoujo, and Welcome to NHK.

I know that those animus are not surreal, but its philosophical, and psychological aspects are top notch.

For Jigoku Shoujo. I like the way they describe how the person decided to send someone to hell, even though they also would be sent to hell.

For Welcome to NHK. Melancholic atmosphere of the characters just sinks right through your heart. Even though I'm not a NEET, I do feel the suffering felt by the NEET. Also, it could be said to other characters.

Aldnoah Zero uses a lot of science and physics in its plot. It's a mech anime with a twist where the main character uses knowledge and cunning to fight an army of enemies with better tech.
